Anyone know the best tricks for Search Engine Optimization (SEO)?

I checked out a few books at the library and have been searching the web for answers. I used to use META TAGS to take care of this, but understand the rules have changed after some companies used SEO to get people to come to their websites no matter what they searched for. I used to use good naming conventions, page titles, descriptions, and keywords (usually repeated 4 times to rank higher on the lists).

I'm trying to get my company to look more seriously at attracting people to their website. Anyone know if the SEO service companies are any good? I used to have a "How to Wow" book that gave a good list of the best companies for optimizing your website for search engines. But I can remember where I hid it. Do you know which companies are best?

Appreciate any help...and thanks Justin for including SEO in the topic lineup.

Sincerely,
Biker Pup

As theillustratedman mentioned above, your url has a bit to do with with the relevance to a search term. There are many other factors that come into consideration and where you will rank in the SERP. The Google dance is always changing and SEM optimizers are always trying to stay ahead of the game.

SEM/SEO takes constant testing, theories, analysis, research to stay ahead of the game. This is why companies that charge specifically for SEM/SEO charge such high rates for there services.

What I would do is perform a Google search for SEO tricks and just do some research and testing.

Yeah I think Google totally ignores Meta tags these days. Google determines rank from probably 20 different factors, and as someone pointed out earlier, thats an ever changing list. What you really want to pay attention to is what NOT to do. There's many things that'll get you banned from the Google index, so tread carefully with a lot of get-ranked-quick type schemes.

One great place for more info, subscribe to this site's newsletter... http://www.webproworld.com/ ... they send out a mailing every few days, and it usually just points out some forums on their site that have interesting topics and questions for webmasters. And of course many topics have to do with SEO.

And unless you're swimming in a vault of money like Scrooge McDuck, I wouldn't pay someone else for doing your SEO for ya. It won't take long to figure out what you should be doing, and thats valuable information in case ol Scrooge comes knocking on your door asking to do SEO work for his new "im.rich" domain name.

SEO is a popularity contest. The more links you have going to your Web site, the better you will rank.

Oh dear,

Well, join the Google Webmaster Center and you can find out what works and what does not work. Also there Youtube video on such questions, like the one you posted on here. Dont second guess. META tag is still essential. Some SE do them some dont. You can figure out which do and which dont after awhile.

Get yourself an account with google, upload a verification code for your site, stick that in a file called Robot.txt, upload it to your server, get it verified. Get your sitemap also for your website (all explained how to do it on this Webmaster's Center) stick it into your root folder. You are done! Build and monitor your pages, you are always optimising your pages to get ranked and higher if possible. The number of factors on-page and off-page are too many to discuss on this forum. Its like getting to the holy grail. Its always changing. lol

Theres a word for it - forever changing. Someone posted a very interesting question, its on youtube, "in five years will SEO still be still here to stay?"

Anyways. Yahoo, Bing do it slightly differently.

Try them!

I find it so confusing :S
I have a new flash games website I launched a few months back to back up my own games (Bunny Invasion), and have found SEO as such a hassle.

In anyone's experience is it worth paying companies to do it for you, or does that generally not work out so well.

I think you try to learn it yourself, it will help you in the long run, there are a lot of free ebooks, youtube tutorials and there are a lot you can pay for. Just start studying and in a month or two you'll have a good idea on what to do. Also if your keywords are medium to long tail than its really not all that hard.
